A Cute Little RV - some reviews ...

This review appeared in the January 2004 edition of The Caravan Club Magazine:

DAVID BERRY has had a travel feature published within our pages (French Alps, June 2000), as well as publishing three books on motor caravanning, and clearly has itchy feet. In 2003 he shipped his Hymer motorhome to Florida and spent six months touring the USA, shipping home via Newark, New Jersey. The whole adventure was recorded on a daily basis, and the photo collection runs to 1100 images. Rather than edit the record and publish it as a book, David has decided to try the electronic route and has published it as a CD-ROM. Were it in book form, David says it would run to over 600 pages. The diary is well written, and each html file comprises a week from the diary, liberally interspersed with high-quality pictures. It works well in this format. There are also details of the shipping arrangements, motor insurance and costs. The CD is designed to be compatible with most Windows-based computers using Microsoft Internet Explorer. Titled after a comment often made about the author's Hymer B584, it's available from Keyham Books, Startley, Chippenham, Wiltshire SN15 5HG. GH

'A Cute Little RV' was also reviewed in Motorcaravan Motorhome Monthly (MMM):

Round USA by magic carpet

Whether you are fascinated or bored by diaries of other people's travels, you are likely to find something interesting or even absorbing in David Berry's CD diary, A Cute Little RV. Essentially, this is an account of six months spent on tour in the USA in David's own motorhome, which was shipped out and back for the trip. In addition, it contains eight sections of detailed information on all the stages of preparation for the venture, which would be very instructive for anyone contemplating the same sort of project. Chapters on the 'build-up' include preparing and shipping the 'van. At the end, David gives his conclusions and afterthoughts, reveals costings, and lists all manner of sources of useful information and services. The diary consists of a chapter for each week. Each contains a daily account of activities, incidents, and encounters, together with many captioned, high-quality photographs. I found the pictures had hooked me, spending ages scrolling through one after another. If this lengthy work were in book form - and it isn't - it would extend to some 600 pages. That just goes to show how much you can pack into one CD, including a vast number of high-resolution photographs. When it is on a computer screen, the impact of a diary is going to depend even more on the quality of presentation than when on printed pages. I think it is fair to say that every 'page' on the screen looks good and the whole work is well set out. It took me a moment to discover how to escape from the title page (with its uncharacteristically misty opening shot) by clicking on 'Welcome to the log of our USA tour'. After minimal exploring, navigating your way around the various parts of the publication is simple and quick. There is even precise advice on how to temporarily reconfigure your screen area setting in order to obtain the best view of the pages. A Cute Little RV by David Berry runs with Windows and Internet Explorer on PCs. It seems to me to be a bargain at £10.99, including postage, from Keyham Books, Startley, Chippenham SN15 5HG. BC

Author's note: I have improved the opening page - clearer photo and the link from the title page has been made more obvious.
